Our rich and varied collections reflect the culture of the people of the Lincolnshire and celebrate the County’s social history from 1750 until the current day. They illustrate domestic, community and commercial life, crafts, transport, agriculture and industrial heritage. The Museum even displays an authentic WW1 tank named “FLIRT”.
We are also home to the interactive, Royal Lincolnshire Regimental Galleries which have won prestigious national awards.
Nearby the Museum you can visit Ellis’s Windmill which is a working 18th century mill and run entirely by the Museum’s volunteer millers (weekends only). The Museum is regularly described by its many visitors as “a Lincoln Gem” and “Excellent Value for Money”.
We offer a range of services which include a vibrant special events and exhibition programme; a community gallery; National Curriculum linked educational sessions and a series of fascinating talks and quizzes. The Museum has a small tearoom, a well stocked souvenir shop and can also be hired as a venue.
About the Museum of Lincolnshire Life:
The Museum is housed in a Victorian military barracks built for the Royal North Lincoln Militia in 1857. The barracks is a fine example of Victorian military architecture and is a grade 2 listed building.
The current Museum was founded in 1969 and over the years has built up a large and fascinating collection of more than 250,000 objects on display and within its stores.
Visitors can enjoy the charming period room and shop settings displaying our wonderful social history collections with a working Victorian kitchen and printing press during special events days. The Museum also boasts a nationally important agricultural and industrial collection. Our displays include impressive steam engines, threshing machines and the iconic World War 1 tank developed and built by Fosters of Lincoln.
